Which is better - Chinese granite or Ukrainian?

Introduction

Every buyer who needs to choose between Ukrainian and Chinese granite faces contradictory statements. Some companies assure that Chinese granite is superior to Ukrainian granite in terms of quality, while others claim the opposite, stressing that the only advantage of Chinese granite is its price.

To understand this issue, it is worth putting aside marketing arguments and focusing on the exact physical and chemical properties and mineral composition of these materials.

Origin of Chinese and Ukrainian granite

Ukrainian granite has a long history of extraction, in particular at the deposits in Zhytomyr region (Vasylivske, Omelyanivske and Pokostivske). It has proved to be a high-quality, durable and wear-resistant material that has not needed additional advertising for decades.

Chinese granite began to appear on the Ukrainian market about 10 years ago. However, it is worth noting that most of the materials sold under the brand name "Chinese granite" are actually syenites, which are rocks that are significantly inferior to real granite in terms of their characteristics.

Features of Chinese "granite"

Syenite is a plutonic rock with a low quartz content (up to 5%). It consists of:

  • Potassium sodium feldspar (65-90%)
  • Plagioclase (10-35%)
  • Dark-coloured minerals (up to 40%)
  • Quartz (up to 5%)

Due to the low quartz content, this material has significantly lower strength, water absorption and wear resistance.

Comparison of physical and mechanical properties

Physical and mechanical characteristics (on the example of Pokostovsky granite and Chinese Bella White stone):

Property. Pokostovsky granite "Bella White
Average density (kg/m³) 2740 2650
Water absorption (%) 0.24 0.33
Compressive strength (MPa) 220 156

Mineral composition:

Component Pokostovsky granite (%) "Bella White (%)
Microcline 15-20 70-90
Plagioclase 35-55 10-30
Quartz 10-25 1-5

Pokostovsky granite demonstrates significantly better performance in all key parameters, making it a more reliable and durable material for construction and decoration.

Risks of using Chinese "granite"

  • Cracks and chips in the facing plates.
  • Rust on the surface of the floor tiles.
  • Rapid wear of countertops and other structures.

These problems often arise from the poor quality of the material, which is often sold as Ukrainian granite. Therefore, the buyer should demand quality certificates that confirm the origin and properties of the stone.

How to avoid mistakes when choosing granite

  1. Ask for quality certificates from the seller.
  2. Check the physical and chemical characteristics and mineral composition of the material.
  3. Avoid products that do not have documented quality assurance.
  4. Choose reliable suppliers with a good reputation.

Conclusion.

Ukrainian granite, in particular its Zhytomyr varieties, is a time-tested material with high performance characteristics. Chinese granite, as a rule, cannot provide this level of reliability and durability. When making a choice, do not rely only on the appearance of the stone, but focus on its properties and documentary evidence of quality. Ukrainian granite is an investment in durability and aesthetics that justifies its price.
