Installation of granite monuments
When and why to install granite monuments
Tombstones are usually installed no earlier than a year after the burial. This is because the earth on the grave must settle and compact to its natural state during the change of the four seasons. Thanks to this, after the installation of a heavy granite headstone, the soil will not sink, which ensures the stability of the structure.
Preparation for the monument installation
The installation of a monument involves laying a foundation that matches the type of soil and the size of the headstone. Granite monuments are placed on a small foundation made of reinforced concrete. The specifics of preparation depend on the type of soil:
- Clay soil - requires a more complex foundation design due to its high mobility.
- Stable ground - simplifies the installation process.
In unstable areas, the foundation of the monument is additionally connected to the foundation of the fence or other methods of strengthening are used.
Stages of installation of granite monuments
- Levelling and compacting the soil Before starting work, the area is thoroughly levelled and compacted by tamping.
- Laying the foundation The foundation trenches are dug around the grave, 10-15 cm from its edges. The depth of the trench is usually 15-20 cm, and its dimensions exceed the dimensions of the pedestal by 10-15 cm. For large monuments, a foundation with additional support elements is used.
- Laying reinforced concrete beams or pouring the foundation
- Reinforced concrete beams of the required size are laid in the trenches.
- Alternatively, reinforcement is installed and poured with cement mortar.
- Checking the foundation level After laying, check the horizontal level of the foundation, the correct relative position of the beams, and their orientation relative to the fence and neighbouring monuments.
Installation of monument elements
- Preparing the base A thick layer of cement mortar is applied to the foundation. The pedestal (pedestal) is installed first and levelled.
- Installation of a flower garden or tombstone The next step is the installation of the flower bed or slab. They are also installed on the cement mortar, observing the level and the correct angle of the joints.
- Installation of the stele A metal pin is inserted into the hole of the pedestal, lubricated with glue. A stele is installed on it, oriented strictly vertically. The correctness of its position is checked.
- Fixing the structure All the joints of the elements are sealed with cement mortar. After half an hour, the excess is carefully removed.
Final works
After the monument was installed:
- The paving around the monument is made with cement mortar.
- Fill the flower bed with soil.
Can I install the monument myself?
If you have basic construction knowledge, you can install small monuments yourself. However, for complex structures or unstable soils, it is recommended to contact a professional.
Conclusion.
Proper installation of a granite monument is a guarantee of its durability and stability. Regardless of the complexity of the work, high-quality foundation preparation and adherence to technology will ensure the aesthetic appearance and reliability of the memorial structure for many years.
