Labradorite-Zhytomyr deposits
General information
Labradorite is a coarse-grained rock that impresses with its unique beauty and richness of colour. It is found in many countries around the world, but each deposit has its own distinctive features. Zhytomyr deposits, in particular, are famous for the quality and aesthetics of labradorite, which has gained worldwide fame for its unique appearance.
Characteristics of labradorite
Labradorite is distinguished by a black, grey or brown background with many crystals that create a unique colour scheme:

- From light blue to deep blue.
- From milky to fiery red.
Production history
The first deposit of labradorite in Ukraine was discovered in 1894 in Zhytomyr region, near the village of Holovyno. This laid the foundation for the development of the Golovino deposit, which today is one of the largest suppliers of labradorite not only in Ukraine but also abroad.
Mineral composition
- Plagioclase (Labrador): 85 %.
- Quartz: 7 %.
- Pyroxene: 3 %.
- Potassium feldspar: 3 %.
- Other impurities: 1 %.
Physical and mechanical properties
- Compressive strength: 162 MPa.
- Bending strength: 621 MPa.
- Erasability: 0.50 g/cm².
- Water absorption: 0,21 %.
- Radioactivity: It corresponds to Class 1 - an absolutely safe material.

- The guaranteed service life of the products is 200 years, but archaeological finds confirm its durability for a much longer period.
